Yes, it's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'm reading some people dissing Coulson. Calling him a bit player, and responding to Gregg's interview quotes as if he were getting too big for his britches.

I thought there was a clear, canonical nudge-nudge-wink-wink that establishes him as badass, up to and including this poster, the post-credit tags, and at least one of the shorts--the Funny Thing Happened one...

Now I'm wondering if I'm responding to him in a parallel way to how I see people responding to Loki, but I swear it's in the text! Son of Coul rocks.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

I'm amused by Nick Fury in Gollum stance behind him.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Not particularly keen on Coulson (or particularly against him either), but I thought his increased prominence at the start of this movie was like a metaphorical noose being lowered around his neck.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I've enjoyed him in the Marvel movies, but I was a bit surprised at how incredibly popular he was in fandom. I mean, before Avengers, he didn't really DO much (I hadn't seen those shorts, though, and the "Funny Thing Happened..." one is pretty great and does indeed establish him as pretty badass). He showed up and delivered exposition. Sure, he delivered it well, but still. People really got into him. I don't think he deserves disses, though!

I love that the #1 hit when you google Coulson weapon is exactly the one I'm usually looking for: [link]

Now, obviously, fandom has a way of investing in characters the writers haven't spent much time on (I'm calling it the Figwit Reaction for the moment, but I'm open to discussion), but I felt that they played him nice and subtle, with a understated air of authority especially up against Iron Man and his brashness.

And I think the two shorts he got (I haven't seen the one on the Thor disc) was either a response to fan reaction, or the creators noticing for themselves how suave and debonair he is.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I love that comic--especially Loki and the kitten.

We won’t stop until everyone is gay.

Are these shorts online or DVD extras or what? I am not familiar with them.

Both, I believe. SA linked them for me on Goodreads!

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer," set before Thor.

"The Consultant," set between Iron Man 2 and The Avengers.

GS: If you had to choose between kicking evil in the head or the behind, which would you choose, and why? Minsc: I'm not sure I understand the question. I have two feet, do I not? You do not take a small plate when the feast of evil welcomes seconds.

I thought Coulson's badassedness was pretty well established by "If you try to escape, or play any sort of games with me, I will taze you and watch "Supernanny" while you drool into the carpet." Everything else was just gravy.
