I didn't realize it came out in 1942, so that was well before the war was over.
It was made not long after Pearl Harbor, before the horrors of the war in Europe had really sunk in. Hence the line, "I bet they're asleep all over America".
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

My 2 disappointments about being in Spain right now are missing that Casablanca showing, and the Hunger Games premiere.
ha! on balance I'd prefer to be in Spain! :-)
I am very interested to see The Raid: Redemption, even if it will require some squinting.

Hmm. That reminds me, I haven't watched my DVD of Ninja Assassin yet. Maybe that's what I'll do today...
Also, I think the movie should be renamed Victor Laszlow: Balls of Steel. Seriously, the man is a badass.
Cosigned! I mean, I love Rick, and yes, I swoon over him pining after Ilsa, but it's hard to feel too sad that she ends up with Victor Laszlow, who is awesome (and hot) and clearly adores her.
FCM? Rick, Louis, Victor
F Rick, C Louis, M Victor.
In other words, Ilsa ended up getting it right.
Yeah, I couldn't even make it past the opening bloodbath of Ninja Assassin. Oh well. Anyone want it?
What Fred Pete said. Also, I'll be in my bunk.
