My grandfather went completely blind from macular degeneration.
My grandmother did as well, or if not completely, enough that she couldn't drive or read easily. And she'd already gone deaf in one ear years earlier. Fortunately her hearing in her other ear was fine enough and she loved the books on tape and listening to music. And having conversations. She was fully engaged in what was going on around her up until her death.
So if I can sneak away from work long enough to see a movie this week, should it be The Secret World of Arreitty, Chronicle, or This Means War?
do not watch the final of the 3. I've not heard a good word about it.
ita liked it, le nubian. She just saw it this weekend.
Yeah, that's what's making me put it up for consideration, as ita's taste in entertainment matches mine more closely than just about anyone's.
I really loved The Secret World of Arrietty, Matt. It's a relatively slight story, but the characters were engaging enough. But I think you'd really appreciate it because it's classically beautiful in the Ghibli style.
My grandmother has the macular degeneration and can't read at all any more, but can still see well enough to comment on your outfit.... I think the weirdness is that you (often?) lose the straight-ahead vision, but the peripheral is better. So she can see stuff in the world but not really focus on anything.
That's what happened with my mother - she now has a very small amount of vision around the edges. She's also almost completely deaf.
All my votes for
Chronicle
!! So fucking good.
I'd vote Chronicle first, This Means War second.
