Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I really want to see The Woman in Black, but I am really really bad at watching scary movies. I think I need to wait and rent it, no way I can watch it all the way through in one sitting in a darkened theater.
This weekend I saw THE MOST DEPRESSING MOVIE EVER MADE, aka We Need to Talk About Kevin. It's beautifully directed, but bleak bleak bleak. I didn't actually buy the world of the film, but the performances are mesmerizing.
THE MOST DEPRESSING MOVIE EVER MADE
More than Ponette? More than the original Dutch version of The Vanishing? More than... Dancer in the Dark?!
Having now read the description for that movie, I am considering self-injury in order to facilitate amnesia. Thanks!
Yes, even more than both those films.
Tilda Swinton is in it, and I'm sure she's fabulous, but I'm so not going to see that film.
More than... Dancer in the Dark?!
Yes.
I only saw about ten minutes of it, and I had to leave the room. It's raw and brutal and devastating.
At least Dancer in the Dark had singing.
Good lord. I also use Dancer in the Dark as a bleak yardstick, so I think I'll be giving that one a miss.
Yikes. My coworker is a huge Lionel Shriver fan (author of the novel) and she's super excited about going to see We Need to Talk About Kevin. I would kinda like to go, but I'm really not sure it's the best movie to see while pregnant, and you all are confirming my inclination to stay away. Maybe in 20 years.
