Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.

Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

I'm sure my very teenagerish disgusted reaction set him straight fairly quickly, but I'm still grossed out by it.

I was 12 years old, wearing an empire-waisted peasant-style shirt that was really popular at the time (1978), and I was a fat kid. I was in line to get on one of those spin-really-fast-until-the-floor-drops rides at the local amusement park (Old Chicago, for any Chicagoistas who might remember the first-ever indoor theme park), and the teen girl running the ride asked me if I was pregnant. No, and ewwwww!!!

Art Crawl!!!

Akira: so they're changing the location, casting all non-Asian actors but keeping the Japanese names?

Or, is I09 just talking about the characters using the original names because those are the names that are known?

Socks are a running theme throughout the series. They are used as symbols of freedom, redemption and love.

the teen girl running the ride asked me if I was pregnant. No, and ewwwww!!!

Oh, that's a bad one. People! Stop asking if someone's pregnant! It's just not a good idea.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Hec, @thedailyMUBI just tweeted a link to your HiLoBrow posts. So you may see a few hits today...

Right the fuck on!

Thrive to spite them

I think I looked basically the same from when I was 16 or so until mid twenties - when I was still being mistaken for being 16 or 17. I got carded and got surprised reactions that I wasn't 16. But when I was 16 I had a few people think I was 19 so I'm not sure what changed exactly.

Will and I saw Puss N Boots and it was a lot of fun and a lot better than I expected it to be.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

5 Old TIme Prejudices That Still Show Up In Every Movie. Well, "every movie" is a bit of a long shot. "Are rarely contradicted" is more accurate.

I have a beef with point #4: Only the pretty girls are allowed to live. Because Michelle Rodriguez is apparently not pretty, and Michelle Yeoh is apparently not physically capable. I think both these positions weaken their argument markedly. Oh, yeah--Sigourney Weaver is *not* traditionally pretty in Alien. I think the point may be that the more butch chicks die, but that's a slightly different angle.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Physically, my features and body didn't change much from 14-21. In that range, I was assumed to be about 17/18 all the time.

Yep except in my case it'd be 14-26, and I looked about 16. I was like Alyson Hannigan minus the fabulous acting career.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I had the same issues with #4, ita. I was like, "Ripley is traditionally feminine? ...What?"

Huh! Snow White and the Huntsman looks kind of awesome. Mirror Mirror... not so much.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Neil Gaiman shared this on Facebook - I think many here would appreciate it:
