Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Peter Jackson Hobbit blog on 3D. Completely fascinating 11 minutes that draws you back into the level of detail, and makes me sad because the DVDs (BluRays) for this are not going to be enough for the experience. But, oh god, I can't wait for December 2012. Just hearing the strains of music made my heart leap!
They're fucking hand drawing concept art in 3D, two people at a time.
I know!!!
Loved that.
For reasons of whatever, I've been reading a Salon article about The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and I'm struck by what the screenwriter said:
“I don’t believe in research. You have to tell a story in a movie. Sometimes the facts disturb all that. I was asked to adapt, and that was what I decided to do.”
Don't you at least have to do the research so you know what you're adapting? Maybe life is actually a really good story--go on, check it out.
I just saw Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Hilarious, but seriously, seriously gory. Less disturbingly so than, let's say, early Peter Jackson, but still gross if that's a thing for you. Alan Tudyk is great as always, but the real surprise was how sweet Tyler Labine was. After only knowing him as Sock on Reaper (who almost drove me away before they started introducing an interesting mythology before being cancelled), he was really funny in this. Playing a character with a bit of self-awareness and self-consciousness definitely helps him. Definitely worth a rental.
On a quasi-related note (horror movies), Hec, you magnificent bastard, I am loving your 60's horror movie posts on HILOWBROW. Have you ever thought of doing a movie book?

Thank you! And may I say, my editor likes it when people LIKE it on Facebook so if any of you feel like giving it a click, it gives him a happy and ultimately I wind up getting more writing opportunities and money etc. (HiLobrow is somewhat related to an online writing group that includes a lot of editors and publishers so it gets seen by people who can help me.)

This is definitely a conscious push on my part to break out of music writing and establish myself in writing about film. I have just started to get a notion that I'll have written about half a book's worth of material by the time I'm done with this.
Yeah, I've so far avoided the whole Facebook thing (mainly since it is blocked at work and I can't be buggered at home to join so far), but I do need to do something about it eventually.
Resistance is futile!!!!
The negative reviews are piling up for Jack and jill.
1. How did this movie get financed?
2. Who is the audience for this movie?
I actually liked The Wedding Singer, but there is no fucking way I'm going to see this movie under any situation. I don't care if it shows up on TBS some Saturday when I'm bored.
Is there supposed to be some sort of advertising subtext to imply that Adam Sandler as a man is relatively catchlike attractive and just disgusting as a woman? Because they're both plain as mud to me.
