I assumed that Katniss is from Appalachia--the setting seemed very Appalachian to me. So, Scotch Irish and maybe some American Indian? And who knows what else considering it's not set now with the demographics of now.

Ah. That's the only thing I've seen her in and I can definitely see her as Katniss based on that performance.
I'm honestly just basing my opinion on the red carpet pictures of her, so I could be completely wrong. But I did see Katniss as littler, really lean and wiry, and definitely darker, although that's what hair dye and contacts are for, I guess.
To my minds eye, this is katniss: [link] I have always pictured her as a plainer, teenage version of this actress.
