"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

This may be the best assessment of Jules et Jim that I've ever seen.

In your face, Andrew Sarris!

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

the frequently used plot of "movie-besotted beautiful young people kill time stylishly."

An excellent description of both Antonioni and Last Year at Marienbad.

Merci.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Who would you have picked instead?

I can't lie, I'm excited about Tom Hardy. But I suspect Anne can do a decent job.

Hmm. Now I realise I'd have wanted Morena Baccarin.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

P-C, another French New Wave flick you might like is Cleo From 5 To 7, which is kind of a feminist take on the frequently used plot of "movie-besotted beautiful young people kill time stylishly."

Hm. Also available streaming and added to the queue. I'm not sure whether I want to have some sort of French New Wave Weekend or space these out.

The much-loved Small Change is not available on Netflix. Ah well. I have enough to watch already.

Uh. I am underwhelmed. Meh.

Well, it's not really a surprise, although I was expecting Talia al-Ghul more.

Or do you not like Anne Hathaway (in general or specifically for the part)?

I vote for French New Wave Weekend! You can top it all off with Godard's Weekend and then take to the hills with the anarchists!

I have this fear that I will hate them all and wonder why I like movies.

I'd be surprised if you hated them all. They're not spinach. They're not conventional Hollywood movies either, though. They take their time, and they linger over ambiguities. They don't insist on American resolutions. Sex and romance don't inevitably lead to True Love. There's a much more varied emotional pallette. They're usually very charming. I can't imagine somebody watching Anna Karina in Band of Outsiders and not being at least a little bit taken with her. She's cool!

Hey. New board.

I like the Anne Hathaway casting. I think there is potential there.
