A reaction to Kathy's white font with a MAJOR FUCKING SPOILER, and represents the only thing I didn't like in terms of a plot point:
they nuked Vulcan. VULCAN. wtf? Spock's always gets screwed over in Star Trek. Always.
'The Girl in Question'
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

I'm pretty sure in calendar years, Spock is older than all of them, since he's a prof while the rest of them are all students.
[eta: Well, except for Scotty, but I'm still pretty sure Spock is the oldest one on board.]
In (original) canon, Spock served on the Enterprise before Kirk, with Captain Christopher Pike. Is this out the window?
It's better to get my complaining out of the way, because Hubby wants to see this, and he'll be happier if I'm not grousing the whole time.
They don't really address that, although it's possible, since Spock and Pike are familiar with each other in the scenes we see them in together.
And boy howdy, that Ed Burns is dreamy, isn't he? Whoever made this movie sure thinks so!
You laugh, but that same approach was the only remotely watchable aspect of A Sound of Thunder...
Movies I have walked out of: Muppet Movie
GASP!

No, that's still canon. Spock is First Officer for Cpt Pike and teaching at the Academy when he's not on active duty.
Oh, yeah, we saw A Sound of Thunder. Hubby loved the story. It wasn't too bad, but we never see movies first run, always at the dollar movie, so we don't feel bad for paying the money.
Re: Trek and Spock.
OK, the meeting of Spock and Kirk hasn't been covered in anything other than some novels, so this approach works.
Trek novels: a fanfic writer's wet dream.
Crash (the Cronenburg one).Zounds!
Matt -- Ah, but Ed Burns didn't write & direct A Sound of Thunder.
The excitment about Star Trek confuses me, too. I still think it looks godawful. Just as a movie, leaving aside the Trek-ness of it... I mean, nobody else thinks it looks like Starship Troopers without the funny parts? That, plus my general reaction to Abrams, makes me suspect it's best if I don't bother.
Besides, I'm still guilt-ridden over missing Crank 2.
