Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
That's some cast.
I'm excited to see that.
I might actually get to see a movie in a theater! My office is planning a work trip to see The Social Network.
I love my office.
Oh. My. Gods. Hellen Mirren as Prospero is possibly the most amazing piece of casting news I think I've ever heard.
I just had a massive geekgasm.

That is pretty awesome.
I just... I have serious problems with Caliban being played by the only person of color in the entire damn movie. Even if Taymor treated the Caliban storyline mercifully, it still rankles.
My Shakespeare-professor aunt-in-law is cranky that the character has been renamed Prospera. (Cross-casting in Shakespeare has been around since, well, SHAKESPEARE, just let her play ProsperO.)

Fair point. Though I still want to see Honsou as Caliban.
Yeah, Jess. That's kind of silly. But whatevs. I'm hoping/expecting Mirren to make the most badass Prospero ever.

This, too, but eh.
Fair point. Though I still want to see Honsou as Caliban.
And he'll be amazing. It's just... way to (unintentionally, I hope) reinforce shitty fucking stereotypes. There's other ways of marking Caliban as Other.
