The Gibson Hamlet had Helena Bonham Carter as Ophelia. That was the first time I found Ophelia truly interesting and moving. I was deeply disappointed by Branagh's Hamlet, especially considering how much I liked his Henry V. I don't think I've seen the Hawke version, and I'm feeling ok with that. The Tennant Hamlet was fun.
I wish I had this many filmed versions of The Tempest to chose from.

Not for the full play. He was wonderful in Slings and Arrows, but for me that was Geoffrey Tennant doing Ophelia, rather than watching Ophelia as a character in the context of a play, reacting to and being reacted to by other characters.

Thanks! I'll have to look for them. The Tempest is my favorite Shakespeare play. I saw a wonderful version live back in the early '90s.
I'd like to see Juliet Landau as Ophelia.
When I was growing up we didn't have a VCR and miniseries were very important to my parents so I have icky memories of watching Roots and The Holocaust while eating dinner.
Does Testament count as a made-for-TV movie? It was planned as one but released in theatres after it was made however I only saw it on TV. I had nightmares about nuclear war for years after.

It was fan-fucking-tastic, is what it was!
I have yet to like a Hamlet. I think it's because I didn't study it in school, so I'm missing subtleties. Hell, I didn't even know how it ended until the Gibson outing.

I've yet to see an episode of Gilligan's Island. And that bothers me not one whit. I expect to die this deprived.
I hated Gibson's. Liked Brannaugh's just fine. Never saw Ethan Hawke, and as mentioned before I want the Tennant version to be a person so I can do dirty things to it, I loved it so much.
I really don't think that all deaths of women are fridging, and that article edges close to this. Also, men are killed to give male characters angst too. Nolan has a pretty high body count period.
But, no, he's not populating his worlds richly with women of extreme agency. However, is he had?
