Well, I think, in a way, it is a blueprint for Moulin Rouge- the humor and ridiculous opulance laid over a cliched tragedy. I think perhaps he misunderestimated the cliche of Romeo and Juliet or the actual quality that is Shakespeare, as well as the draw of Leo for teen girls at that time.

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I was just looking for the "Post-Haste" scene on Youtube (because I cannot believe that a movie with a Post-Haste truck is taking itself seriously), and I did not find that, but I just watched the trailer. There were a lot of comments about Claire Danes and what a bad choice she was, including one that said he "never knew any guys who licked her". I cannot stop laughing.

Ahahaha, I didn't catch that! There were various cute references like that throughout the movie.
I thought Claire Danes did the Shakespeare better than Leo, myself.
I adore the Baz Luhrman R&J. I can't really explain why, but I don't think it feels like parody and I think it works in all its over-the-topness.
this was my favorite song on the R&J soundtrack. [link]
Is it the Butthole Surfers one? That one is mine. (I am on my phone).
no, it's Des'Ree's "Kissing You".
OK- now I am watching R+J for the first time since the theatre...
And what I have to say is: PAUL RUDD!!!!!!
