Yeah I mean I've worked longer for real work emergencies, or quite frankly for fairly big overtime pay. But it is really too much for someone who is not a close dear friend, and even then it depends.

And CA labor laws means the boss might put the foot down. More than 8 in a day or 40 in a week is OT. If he's working 2 shifts, the second shift would be mostly OT. So then the boss is paying someone to be on vacation, and 1.5 paying someone to fill in.

He's salaried and violates CA labor laws pretty regularly (often working 7 days in a row) but yeah. I'm sure coworker didn't ask for it off in advance because the boss would have said no to anyone wanting to take Labor Day weekend off.
