I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

Her name was Magill, and she called herself Lil, but everyone knew her as Nancy.

They call me Mimi; I don't know why.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Hey, SNOW!

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

There used to be a practice among poor rural whites in the South and West of naming kids Judge and Colonel and General for just that reason. Occasional rather than common practice, but something that happened often enough not to be remarked upon.

I have some vague recollection of poor rural blacks in the South and West going with similar names for similar reasons but no idea where the article (or whatever) is.

My Family Name things aren't so wacky. We thought my sister was the third generation with a middle name of "Joy" but we found out at my Grandmother's funeral that Gramma was named for someone too, so she's at least the fourth.

My Great Grandfather was named Guillermo and his son William died. The surviving siblings each named a child for him. So my Father grew up as Bill with first cousins (who lived nearby) named Billy and Will. Fortunately they all had different last names. I think my Dad is the 12th or 13th William Francis "Booth" in the family.

I have a friend who's family tree includes twins named Hubert and Herbert. I cannot imagine an era where that wasn't just plain mean.

Today is going FANTASTIC.

In addition to looking forward to getting yelled at this afternoon, our main server just went comatose. Very, very, very, VERY bad.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

Ugh, Sara.

I'm probably going to get yelled at too, for something that happened before I started working at this firm, which makes me want to be sick again, but I really can't.

Other now uncommon names in my family:

Redmond, Prime, Prosper, Clementin, Madonna, Olivera, Eugene, Monte.

My great grandfather's name was Prosper Ozon. Did I ever tell you how I found reviews of a self published novel where the protagonist was named Prosper Ozone? It's a strange coincidence. But maybe megan walker can tell me, how common in Prosper as a name in France.

System admin just came and got the manual. That cannot be good.

What kind of server is it, if I may ask?

Ugh, you guys.

I just don't understand yelling at people in a office setting. We're all grownups. What good does it do?

Okay, I just came across the name Vector Barter in an old Newfoundland Census. I wonder if that's supposed to be Victor. But Vector is amazing.

Obama still fighting to keep Crackberry:

I'm still clinging to my BlackBerry. They're going to pry it out of my hands.[...]

I don't know that I'll win, but I'm still--I'm still fighting it. And--but here's the point I was making, I guess, is that it's not just the flow of information. I mean, I can get somebody to print out clips for me, and I can read newspapers. What it has to do with is having mechanisms where you are interacting with people who are outside of the White House in a meaningful way. And I've got to look for every opportunity to do that--ways that aren't scripted, ways that aren't controlled, ways where, you know, people aren't just complimenting you or standing up when you enter into a room, ways of staying grounded.
