Even if I'm looking at the very cheapest of each company, there are too many car companies!
I can say my MIL really likes her Honda Fit and another relative really likes her Toyota Yaris Hatchback. I don't have any direct experience with other cheapest models. I've read that the Ford Focus is pretty reliable these days and has cool electronics if you get the SYNC package and I imagine there are some incredible deals at the moment. The Fit is amazingly versatile, you can carry a lot of stuff in it with the back seats down as I learned when moving my BIL.

If you're getting a used car, and can find this, the Toyota Echo is excellent for its size. Really. I think Toyota stopped making them in '04 (and replaced it with the Yaris -- WTF, Toyota?), but even an '04 will last forever. Mine's a 2000 and shows no signs of slowing down.
t /Toyota pimp

I'm picturing Justin Timberlake in the backseat.
We hate our Ford Focus. Buy a Toyota.
Cool. That's actually very helpful, thanks!

WTF is a "yaris"? For some reason I tend to think of Yaris as a moon of Yavin.

Just out of curiosity, what year is it?
We considered an Echo while looking for our last car, but just never came across one to look at.
I gotta pimp Honda, my MIL loves her fit and my 15 year old Civic is a great car.
Who knows?
What do you hate about your Focus? It's not in my price range anyway, but boy the Sync looks cool. In a totally frivolous and unnecessary way, of course.
I really liked my Focus - it was the best-handling car I've ever owned. It was an '00, so I did get a number of recalls on it.

A couple of people have told me that; apparently my car intrigued them enough to look for one of their own, with no luck.
Echo owners REPRESENT!

My impression has been that they really improved the quality with the 2005 overhaul.
Oh, there's also the Nissan Versa that's really cheap if you are willing to go pretty barebones on features. Don't know anyone who owns one though.
