Ha. The school board in my town voted last night to replace the current abstinence-only sex ed curriculum with one that actually mentions contraception. I posted my pleasure at this step. The paper said we are the ONLY SCHOOL DISTRICT IN GEORGIA that is now (well, will be) teaching about contraception.

Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
I just found out last week that my current school is not allowed to teach contraception. Abstinence only.
I thought that under the Old Regime, you couldn't get federal money and teach anything other than abstinence-only.

Yeah. A bunch of states declined the federal funding rather than teach abstinence-only. There's a new set of guidelines that's supposed to be voted on soon.
Sewing is only cheaper if you are either making couture level clothes or things for small children with $1 a yard fabric. This did n ot used to be the case, but since sewing has become a hobby, the mark-up on fabric is insane. If I ever sewed for mself, because I am pretty good, it would be cheaper than buying a good suit, but oi the time!
I am working at the costume shop tonight even though I planned to have it off because of my debacle of a yesterday. I am so tired and my eyes and sinuses still hurt from crying yesterday. Also, I am being treated to a joint student production of The Who's Tommy, which is REALLY off key (my shop is next to and under auditoriums. I think it is a rehearsal, because they keep starting and stopping.
OMG, the girl playing Tommy's mother is spectacularly awful. Smash the Mirror is a really hard song, and you need someone pretty good to make it not suck.
Sewing from scratch is not cheaper than buying cheap clothes, though, even if you don't take your time into account.
But patching/mending old clothes is cheaper than buying new ones.
And the continued supply of cheap clothes is predicated on international trade, cheap fuel, and large companies that can buy/sell/produce in bulk.
See also: cheap food. I bet sales of gardening supplies are way up, too.

I just bought gloves! Mine are for weeding, though. We live downhill from a busy street so no vegetable gardening for us.
Well it looks like I missed the chance to party like it's 1234567890. [link] I shall celebrate with a long evening of SciFi. My long tv night started 45 minutes ago with SG-1, then TNG, Sarah Connor, Dollhouse, then BSG. And all my crew are off doing other stuff so it is just me, the animals, and the wine. Woo!
Tomorrow it is the Garlic Festival in my home town. Yummy times. Work and stuff. Sunday no plans. Monday the kids have no school and my nephew and his wife are visiting from NY so visiting will happen.
There's some info on the proposed new sex ed rules here: [link]
