Awww, there's a nice tribute to Molly Ivins in Daily Kos today (tomorrow is the second anniversary of her death).

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Sophia, the Girl Scouts are a lot better on the gay issue than the Boy Scouts.

Yes, and they operate completely independently of each other.

Cats to become a rabbit should gather immediately now here

When I was young, I read this books called "Adventures in 4-H" about a brother and sister who made it all the way to the State Fair! He raised "baby beeves" and she sewed, I believe. It was probably written in the 50's or 60's, but it made me fascinated with the 4-H. I entered the fair without the 4-H one year, though... the woman who lived in the apartment above my babysitter had us all enter these fairy tale dioramas we made with clothespin dolls. It was really quite fun, but I love crafts.

Actually, it makes me a little sad that my neice is too impatient for crafts, as I would love to do them with her. Unfortunately, her vision outpaces her skill and she gets frustrated and so doesn't like it. I identify with that, but somehow I was able to get over it, as I was definitely making my dolls clothes, knitting and crocheting by the time I was her age (eight).

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Also, the national Girl Scout organization is very progressive, but of course on the local level, a lot depends on the volunteers.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

One of the Boy Scout board members my mom used to deal with made a prejudiced comment about not wanting his food handled by the queers at Cracker Barrel (oh, the irony!). I believe her response may have actually blistered the flesh away from his skull.

My feeling about it is the Boy Scouts are perfectly free to admit and associate with whomever they wish, and they're also free to take the consequences of people's reaction to their bigoted practices. I hate having to tell hopeful teens that I'm not going to buy their popcorn or help their pledge drives, but that organization will never get another penny of my money.
