Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Why marrying for money isn't a bad idea

I'm not ashamed to "marry for money," if that's what would you can even call it, because I don't fundamentally believe it is the "man's role" to provide for women.

My actual motivations, as I see them, are pure enough. I know of great guys out there -- journalists, teachers, non-profit dudes -- who will probably make great dads. But I personally wouldn't pair up with them because, realistically, our two salaries together just wouldn't be enough to cut it for what I want out of life. But, but, but, "Bank accounts shouldn't matter at all!" And while I agree with that in theory, sorry, a man who can provide for me and our children is just much more attractive to me.

megan, Grammar Girl used to work with me, in 2000. She was an editor at an online magazine for caregivers. I used to have to correct her writing all of the time, and so I laugh that she's now got some sort of fame around grammar. I disagree with many of her "rules".

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Wouldn't the ill-advisedness of marrying someone who manages money poorly also apply to any guy looking at the author as a prospective wife, what with:
1) living at the edge of her means,
2) carrying a lot of debt that she's unable to pay off,
3) being unwilling to move somewhere with a lower cost of living, and
4) wanting expensive stuff that can't be had on twice her income?

United Airlines broke a musician's guitar. After getting told it wasn't United's problem too many times, the musician did what they do—he wrote a song. And he's writing two more.

"We're a very knowledgeable family."

Ah, Geoffrey. Poor unlamented tick-tock-man. And that horrible smarmy GRIN.

Sorry, Beverly - Geoffrey isn't Nigel Terry ("And I shall pull this sword from this stone, and be known as NIGEL TERRY?!") - it's John Castle.

And I didn't mean to steal your thunder; I just get ENTHUSED and zip! I'm off. :)

I'm not surprised she needed lots of help, when I hear a lot of her "rules", my first thought is often--you need a rule for that? But I enjoy the podcast for some reason, despite the fact that her name drives me batshit.

She's a nice person, but she drove my friends (then colleagues) Sara and Karen (neither of whom you've met, yet...) NUTS.

Days shrink and grow cold, sunlight through leaves is my song. Winter is long.

No no, Nigel is *John*. John (Castle) is Geoffrey. Right? Yes?

No apologies necessary--glad to share thunder and squee and enthusiasm for such a great movie. Just need to be faster on my feet fingertips with you around!
