Spike? It's you. It's really you! My therapist thought I was holding on to false hope, but…I knew you'd come back. You're like…you're like Gandalf the White, resurrected from the pit of the Balrog, more beautiful than ever. Oh…he's alive Frodo. He's alive.

OMG, one of my friends was on the Rachel Maddow Show tonight. Like, a game night regular. So cool!

He writes the Washington Note, so I knew he did stuff like that, I just had never seen him on TV before. His husband (for now--Damn you! Prop 8) was a fellow prof at the college I taught at on the Eastern Shore.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

Very minor annoyance. A friend who I had not seen in a couple of months stopped by. I had a Hanukkah gift I'd been keeping for her. She was very snippy. Not at how late it was, but that I was handing it to her at my house. Her position was that the way to give a gift was to hold it until I was visiting her house, and give it her there. I was stepping over some kind of line by giving her a present when she was at my house, and making her take it home. (The present was a CD, and she was driving, so it was not like there were schlepping issues.) Is there some rule of etiquette I have not heard of? Cause if not, it seems to me like she was being an ungracious twit.

Kristin, lots of vibes for a peaceful and as-easy-as-possible result for your grandmother, mother, and yourself, of course, as well.

Typo Boy, I think this friend missed the whole point of getting a present.

And now, for the reason I skipped: I need DVDs (both tv and movies) recommendations, for fun and light and yet interesting stuff.

It's for my friend B who is currently in the USA (with its wonderful library systems) who will undergo a medical procedure soon and will have to be in bed for a few days.

She really liked "Gilmore Girls", for example (well, the first seasons, anyway), and if I understood her correctly, she's looking for something of that sort - lots of fun dialogue, with fun characters, but not just the on-the-surface stuff. By the way, she's the friend I used to watch BtVS et al with, so these excellent options are moot. [Edit: it doesn't have to be new stuff, as long as it's out on DVD so the library may have it.]

So, oh, all knowing hivemind, any suggestions? And thanks in advance!

How about "Sports Night" or "Northern Exposure"?

How about "Sports Night" or "Northern Exposure"?

She watched "Northern Exposure" at least once, but it's so delightful (I love it myself) that I will definitely remind her of it. Oh, and I don't think she's ever watched "Sports Night" (I've only watched several episodes myself, but enough to know what's the what) and it's just perfect - it seems just like what she's looking for.

Thanks, javachik!
