Note that there were no gay people before 1946. In fact the word itself had an entirely different definition. The onset was so sudden that people couldn't come up with original words to denigrate them, they called them bundles of wood and unusual.
I'm sorely tempted to post that theory as a comment on the next gay marriage news story I see just to see if anyone is crazy enough to agree.
