Surely he was actually killed. It may be a point of allegation as to who did it, but death of soldiers is pretty well into the factual realm.
That always irks me. "The alleged killer..." Yeah, NSM. Maybe it was allegedly John Doe, but there was an actual killer.
"The alleged killer" doesn't ping, because it's being alleged that Doe is the one. "Allegedly killed", though... nrrghg.
I'm guessing they are thinking of "alleged murder" which is different from alleged killing.
Yeah, it should be, "...was killed, allegedly by [whoever]..."

To my recollection, yeah. I mean, people haven't really seen the state since the early 90s, so I'm thinking our collective memories have softened.
