Perkins, my sympathies. It's been a rough cattime for you.
I now need to think about how to install ac units in vinyl windows. And a slight glitch: the 21" window's screen guiders are slightly less than 21 inches. Less than a millimeter! I think I can fix that with a planer without compromising anything. Neighbor B has offered to help. I may actually ask to shadow him on his home improvement stuff sometimes (he's doing big stuff) just so I can get a little more competent at this stuff.
My mom pointed something out to me: my cousin Joe in Maine is a GC and certified craftsman. Because of the economy, he's in a slow spell and is doing a lot of travelling for work. (His main thing is building and customizing luxury wood yachts, but GCs on the side and build his own home and IL cottage.) Back when I was 15, he lived with us while updating our house for sale. Anyway, I should make a list of stuff this fall and get in touch with him. Heck, I've had him living with me before, he only drove me slightly nuts (mainly bc I was 15 and he adored having a pseudo-younger sister to needle.)
Deck door! Porch supports! Reopen the transom on the balcony! Install an awning! Tile the top of the tub enclosure! Fix all the doors so they latch! Strip and refinish french doors and screens!
And possibly, just possibly, put in a second bath in the basement (totally copycatting neighbor, but as mom points out, relieves the worry about the second floor plumbing dying and having no other working bath while fixing it.)
Yes, all stuff I planned to later rather than sooner, but it might make sense to do this. Especially if I get better rates because he'll have a free place to live and I'm a repeat customer.
We'll see.
