some people here are FREAKING out about the flu. My boss said it was inversely proportional to how busy with real work they were.

Meanwhile our co. has set their own alert level (lower than the WHO, btw). WTF?!?!? and based on what? I have very little faith in it, as I've been told that employees in another branch were once told from a medical DR on staff that anthrax was nothing to be afraid of, it would only make poeple a little itchy.

Don't worry about the swine flu, it will only give you a runny nose.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Here's what I don't understand about swine flu: Is it worse than other flus, or just more unexpected? It's not like the "regular" flu isn't deadly for some.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Vonnie just posted about this in her LJ and it seems to be about as deadly as regular old flu. It's nothing like the avian flu virus.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

I think that the main issues with swine flu are because it's a "new" flu: (1) there's no vaccine for it, which makes kids, elderly, and immunocompromised people more at risk of developing it *if* they're exposed; and (2) there is the possibility, in young healthy people, of their bodies reacting with a "cytokine storm" (which is cool in theory -- that the human body can do that -- but would suck in an epic way if it happened).

t edit But, like David said, for the vast majority of people, it's just a flu.

Ah ha!

I'm pretty sure a friend of mine actually got West Nile, and he turned out OK.
