They cancelled night classes tonight.
I bet we're back in the office tomorrow though.

This looks like the first pic of the plane-boat posted to flickr, before any rescue boats showed up. Crazy!
Timelies all!
Happy Birthday msbelle!
That happened to me with TWA 800, which was my standard transatlantic for years.
I found out from my mom several weeks after it crashed that the youngest sister of one of my childhood friends was on that flight--she was going to Paris to study for a semester. I never knew her, they moved before she was born, but it was startling to see Mrs. Becker on the tv when they would interview family members (she was one of the more vocal of those wanting answers as to why the plane crashed).
Happy Birthday, msbelle!
A colleague in Grad school was on TWA 800 - or whatever replaced it - the next day. I am sure it was a hoot.
They're saying they hit a flock of geese, and an expert pilot on the air said Canadian geese can do a lot of damage. That ... surprises me.
A good picture of the damage a bird can do to a jet engine: [link]
That crashed plane is an amazing story, all 155 survived. Amazing.
I had heard once that a single bird could take down a plane if it got caught in an engine, which seemed like crazy talk at the time because I thought "Dude! Planes fly in the air. Birds fly in the air. Planes must take out birds ALL THE TIME." But I guess it's true. Seems like a serious design flaw, doesn't it?
There's only so much you can do when you have a big air scoop, basically. The engines are pretty damn tough, and they do simulated bird strikes (with frozen chickens!) to see how well they do and what can be done better.
I'm amused to see that the pilot's name is Chesley Burnett Sullenberger III.
I thought the only thing that would make my day worse was if I were wearing light pants, but I guess a plane crash would do it.
USPS returned my cafepress order because of insufficient address. What the fuck did cafepress do to the address? It was fine when UPS picked it up. Why is UPS contracting out the the fucking USPS, damnit.
I'm just tired.
Oh hey, happy birthday for reals this time, msbelle!
