Ah, the crazies....
There's a nice piece in the NYTimes today by a gay guy whose parents got married in Iowa back in the day, because their interracial relationship was illegal in Wisconsin (?) where they lived. (Most shocking note: the mother was arrested for prostitution on their first date, because the cops couldn't figure out another reason a white woman would be out with a black man.)
I love Ryan North kind of a lot because he came up with A Time Traveler's Essentals Shirt
Nothing romantic or lovable about real pirates.
Not true. The charter they sailed under was a working model for anarchist styled democracies. Pirate utopias are pretty fascinating, actually. Recruitment was not that uncommon. And it was far better to be a pirate than a member of the British Navy. While there were certainly pirates who were sadistic killers, it wasn't the norm and wasn't considered good for business. I'd expect you found as many sadists among Her Majesty's navy where the slightest infractions could get you scourged or keelhauled.
Still, you can't discount that pirates stole for a living. I am not cool with that.

One could argue the British Navy did the same.
I have a sudden urge to shout "Hardison", and then run away.
Just ran my lip into a wall.
But plates, bowls, mugs and assorted other things are all boxed up.

As Barb notes, all of the world's navies of that era were encouraged to take booty. Plus, the British kidnapped men to work on their ships. War of 1812 was started by their habit of impressing Americans.
Yeah, I know all that. I still don't like stealing. In any of its forms.
