Okay in my head I can hear the difference between ma-CHURE, ma-CHER, and ma-TURE, but not the difference between tee-VEE and TEE-vee. Am I being dumb?
I am a being of love.
No - the first is a clear pronunciation difference and the second is just a stress difference. The different stress between TEE-vee and tee-VEE doesn't change the sound of the word the way the difference in stress between harASSment and HARassment, for example, changes the actual sound of the word, so maybe that's the difference... that you're not hearing.
Not entirely sure what I just said, but it made sense in my brain.
I think the real question here is, did you know the word spondee before? (Like a dog with a bone, I am.)
Well, I studied lit, so I better know what a spondee is. But the truth is, somewhere along the way in grad school I unlearned almost everything I ever knew about poetic meter. I'm not sure why. I think it was a classic Freudian reaction formation against DeManian close reading.
msbelle, I never program using the actual Tivo box anymore. I just go to mytivo.com and do it there. Much easier!
javachik, I can't get that address to find anything. Is it through tivo.com's website, or is it a different site?
My southern grandmother would say TEE-vee. Also IN-surance. If that helps at all.
Note: I am not 100% sure my actual southern grandmother talks like this, but that's the kind of accent I'm hearing.
Well, I studied lit, so I better know what a spondee is.
Er, so did I, but I don't. Alas.
My mother and her sisters say cell-PHONE. Which doesn't seem weird until you hear it.
Spondee is a new word to me. I like it! Spondee spondee spondee.
