What mainstream term would one use to categorize Violent Femmes? Alternative Rock?
I like books. I just don't want to take on too much. Do they have an introduction to the modern blurb?

I don't think the term "Alternative" was in use during their heyday....
I think I've heard them labeled as Folk-Punk back in the day.

This is for current college students.
I'm working on a new song feature for a 2010 textbook and the first chapter is about Louise Attaque and I want to say their name comes from the fact they are fans of the [musical genre] group Violent Femmes.
American Indie is probably good, because it also reflects that what was called "alternative" in the 80s and 90s was called "indépendant" in France.

The actual lyrics (which are reasonably innocent for Serge) will not be printed in the text, there are just a couple of listening exercises. But, of course, some people might take offense at the "coffee color" theme. But it's Serge, and it's actually a song with easy lyrics for beginners, so it's hard to resist.
