Unplayable Piece Used to Test Player Pianos
It’s called “Circus Galop” or “Death Waltz”, and it’s used to test the performance of player pianos. No single person has ever played it…so far. But if we can put a man on the moon, surely we can genetically engineer a superhuman species that can perform it.
I'm guessing a human would need at least six hands to play it. Sounds cool and fun to watch.
The composer Conlon Nancarrow composed primarily on hand-punched player piano rolls creating music that humans couldn't play. I always thought that was so cool.
what the fuck is that?
That is a Helter Skelter, which is a British fairground attraction.
Hence, "When I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide / Where I stop and I turn and then I go for a ride..."
get the heck out of here.
I am not sure what I thought a HS was, but it wasn't that.
That is going to give me nightmares.
I thought Helter Skelter had something to do with Charles Manson, so I am not sure which gives me worse nightmares.
Manson adopted the expression from the Beatles song, right? Did he know what a helter skelter was?
Can you ride a helter-skelter while playing a hurdy-gurdy?
Manson adopted the expression from the Beatles song, right?
Correct.
Did he know what a helter skelter was?
I don't know. But the song that incurred them to go on a murder spree was "Piggies."
I think they just took "helter skelter" for it's American meaning, just as a generally chaotic scene.
For those that know the Madness song "Waiting for the Ghost Train," a Ghost Train is also a British fairground attraction. Sort of like a Tunnel of Love/Haunted House.
For those that know Richard Thompson's "Wall of Death" - that is also a Fairground attraction. Actually a stunt man rides sideways up and around the wall of a great, round barrel. (I've actually seen one of these.)
