I have to take 2 Ambien anymore for them to work, 5 tylenol for a regular headache...but those are all medications I've been taking for years.

My morphine pump after surgery looped me the hell out, which was great since I had a 7 inch gash stapled from hip to hip.

OTOH, if my delicate baby system has caffiene after 1 p.m., she can't sleep without a pill. Stupid legal drug sensitivty.

I am Erin, though it varies by drug. Ambien knocks me out, but nothing else does. Most pain meds don't help me much. Morphine did very little for me during the ruptured cyst ER incident, and Vicoden barely touched the recovery pain.

I'm told there are other classes of pain meds that would probably work better, and I hope that's true if I ever need them again.

I've never taken Percocet. Does it just make you stoned, or does it affect pain? Vic has only made me itch a couple of times, but it makes me stoned AND is great with pain.

Ty-3...well, like I said...I've taken 4 within a 3 hour period (NPI) and still had back and cramping pain. And I feel like I could be sensible and drive and talk to people.

If it doesn't make me droolingly stupid, the painkiller isn't effective.

Kristen, did you just take the rec dosage? I always am prescribed the 1 pill, every 4-6 hours as needed, and I've learned to ignore it with certain pills and just take two, three if it's before bed.

But I'm always very cautious with new drugs. Which was a pain in the ass learning curve with this Ty-3, cause, dude...not so great.

Percocet's stil a -codone, it's just oxycodone insted of hydrocodone (Vicodin). For whatever reason, that formulation works better for me. (Vic makes me itchy, spinny, pukey, etc. No amount of pain-stoppage is worth that.)

(FWIW, and I would nevereverever advise this, I've stopped the worst of my pain by taking a Perc and having a shot of Fernet. Stopped that motherfucker in its TRACKS. Seriously, it was like an iron wall slamming down and the pain couldn't get through.)

I refered to my students as ladies and gentlemen, and downgraded to boys and girls, to let them know they were acting immature.

I totally do that, too.

On the sir/ma'am thing, I was raised to say it and don't feel it's patronizing or fake or distancing to use. It's a polite thing often used in place of "excuse me?" or "pardon me?" I'll say "sir?" or "ma'am?"

I understand that those terms may seem fake or distancing to people not brought up around them, but they aren't that way to everyone. And, to my ear, I'd much rather hear "Ma'am?" than "What?"

My nieces/nephews are being brought up in the South, so they use those terms with adults including their parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc.

I use it all the time with my students. "Here's your paper, ma'am." Or when I call on students I may just point and say, "Sir?"

My students don't even blink twice at it. And, I live in the midwest. It's not like I have students raised with it.

Also, I realize that using those terms is not a midwestern thing. That's why I don't require/ask/expect it of my students.

I do require and expect basic manners and respect. Not just to me or other adults, but to each other, too.

My brother-in-law the pharmacist always says if you're really in pain to take a Percoset with a glass of wine. FWIW.

I always get itchy on either Vicodin or Percoset, but otherwise just happy stoned. The stoned effect is not as pronounced if I'm actually taking it for, you know, PAIN, though. (And it does lessen my pain, so.)

The advantages of a husband with major league spinal damage is you've got access to the good stuff. When I have bad cramps, he'll start pulling out bottles and ask how looped I want to be.

But, damn, he takes stuff that makes me literally fall over on half a pill. I hadn't felt that drunk since college, and that was the feeling that told me I didn't want to be drunk anymore. Forget thinking and doing anything productive, I was focusing just on keeping the horizon level.
