I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight…

A guy probably would've gotten beaten senseless by his teammates for allowing something like that.

Possibly. I'm thinking about Favre's record touchdown last season, though, and while the defense did clearly go for the receiver, there wasn't quite the... oooomph behind it that there normally would be.

I was originally thinking of that awesome women's softball team that carried the opposing injured player around the bases, though.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

I do think there have been cases where stars on the verge of setting world records have had the opposition kind of fold, especially when said opposition was already behind and had no chance of catching up. I'd vague this up a bit more, but I'm afraid that is as specific as my memory gets right now.

Art Crawl!!!

Well, my bathtub drain has moved from "slow" to "blocked" as in it's been about 36 hours since it was last waterfree. Landlord's handyman not coming round 'til Monday. It's going to be 87 degrees tomorrow.

This is NO FUN.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Last night we saw "Not the Messiah!(He's a very naughty boy)" at Wolftrap.

Cool! Eric Idle and all? I was in two performances of that last week.

“Not dead yet!”

Oh, the college team. I remember reading about that. In looking through the Way Back machine I came across this interesting stat with respect to Walter Johnson:

His earned run average of 1.14 in 1913 was the fourth lowest ever at the time he recorded it; it remains the sixth-lowest today. It could have been lower if not for one of manager Clark Griffith's traditions. For the last game of the season, Griffith often treated the fans to a farce game. Johnson actually played center field that game until he was brought in to pitch. He allowed two hits before he was taken out of the game. The next pitcher - who was actually a career catcher - allowed both runners to score. The official scorekeeper ignored the game, but later, Johnson was charged with those two runs, raising his ERA from 1.09 to 1.14.

Ann, that's a ferret.

juliana, I don't remember too many specifics, but this kind of fits your scenario.

Some years ago (1970s?), two South American soccer teams were playing a World Cup qualifier. One team could advance to the next round if it won by some riduculous margin (maybe 5 or 6 goals), and the other team wasn't affected by the outcome. The team got its margin of victory, and collusion was argued.

Unfortunately, I can't Google anything about that game. But "soccer" and "collusion" will give you a couple other examples where that type of scenario has been argued.
