Don't worry, I'm not gonna start any sword fights. I'm over that phase.

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

tommyrot, I know exactly which picture you mean -- it's in a huge book of the best of Life's photography. Possibly this book. We have a copy up at my grandparents' house at South Lake Tahoe; I spent so many summers and winters poring over all the pictures in that book, including that serene young woman.

The opening credits of Mad Men, with the male silhouette tumbling down the side of an impossibly tall building and crumpling into a pose of perfect false serenity always reminds me of that photo.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

JZ, my mother has that book, too, and that picture, the melty-head Japanese soldier, and the Marilyn-as-other-actresses pictures are the ones that always stuck with me.

Oh, yes, Marilyn as Theda Bara!

And the wee European orphan ecstatically hugging his new shoes, and the Asian woman (Vietnamese?) keening over her beloved, so wild with grief there's a stream of drool falling from her mouth onto the body, and she is so raw and so lost in her sorrow that the line of drool just wrecks you. And the young hotel worker kneeling over RFK.

Aside from Marilyn, it's a pretty bleak book. But astonishing.

"And that's why God Almighty gave us fire insurance and the public defender".

Well, looks like I'm sick. And it takes a lot for me to acknowledge that, so.

But I took a pill to break the fever down, and now I feel I'm concentrated enough to do some work. Although I can probably kiss the idea to clean the house today goodbye, and I hope I'll have enough energy to do groceries later.

The only plus side is that I love the idea of spending time in bed with guilty pleasure books.

Be careful what you wish for, for I wished for some vacation.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

Yep, I had that book too -- and poured over some of the same pictures. And in high school I painted an acrylic picture of the melty-head soldier that I have hanging over on the wall here....

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

I am currently unsubbed from Boxed Set, because I'm behind on Stargate, but may I mention the latest guest added to the DragonCon guest list?

EDWARD JAMES OLMOS, my friends.

hip deep in pie

I am exhausted, yet can't settle on anything. Unable to get work done, and perhaps unwisely, drinking my second coffee of the day. This does not bode well...

And, even though this is supposed to be a strictly climate controlled building, it's very humid in here.
