Teppy, I have to go ahead and quote people, because of the wisdom.
First Amy because, yeah...
They're FUCKTARDS, Steph. Bosses do this kind of thing because they can, for reasons that usually have no basis in reasonable behavior or expectations. You are NOT incompetent, and Boy deserves all sorts of hugs for his incredibly RIGHT reaction.
I know this hurts, because something like this always does, and a gut punch is exactly what it feels like. But please believe this is NOT a reflection on you at all. If you need to curl up and cry and sleep tonight, do that! And rant here all you like.
Then truthiness from Tom...
Pure speculation on my part, but the company closing the office one day a week? Arbitrarily cutting back an employee's salary? Could it be that the company isn't doing well financially, and the management is scrambling for fixes?
And what Brenda said about not having it both ways.
I've been an employer for 20 years (big business start anniversary next month). My best employee ever happens to be the weirdest ever. Believes in every internet conspiracy theory, the US behind 9-11, etc. Never vaccinated any of her children. Amuses us all with her wacky politics. Most competent worker evah. I don't care that she works from home 75% of the time. I don't care that when she is in the office she listens to wacko talk radio. She takes pride in her work. It has nothing to do with me.
I'm not saying I'm the best boss ever, but I think I recognize the competent employee vs. the waste of every dollar paid employee. For a whole lot of years I have read work related posts here from many Bitches. My read as an employer has been that Teppy cares about the quality of the work she does. This is something that has nothing to do with the employer but is an integral part of a person's character.
Teppy, they do not deserve you. Absolutely play the game of quantifying and being all dedicated, but your dedication needs to be directed to finding a worthy situation. You do not deserve this, and they clearly do not deserve you.
: loving greatly on Laura :
It sounded like a cost cutting measure to me. Because if they really didn't think you were doing the job they needed -- they'd have fired and hired. And if they can't do that for legal reasons -- they should have to document. But any way -
GET OUT. If you go into a meeting and use the words performance, but don't actually have standards, something is up. You may never love your job, but you can like it more than you have been.
Things feel very fishy to me.
I hope you go out, have fun , and don't need your exit stratagey.
BTW,I've never met Tim, but give him a big kiss for me.
Happy birthday sj
happy day to Beverley and her DH
Hang in there, Tep.
Happy birthday, SJ.
Sorry couldn't be here sooner; technical wonkiness.
We're glad to see you no matter what time you show up, Bunk.
I totally feel you on that.
Computer wonkiness 3.1 can suck my non-existant dick, though.
It sounded like a cost cutting measure to me.
I was thinking that from the get go. I agree with the others, doesn't sound like a financially secure company. Use the extra 8 hours a week to find a new job. And WTF is the deal with don't do this, why weren't you doing this? Crazy I say. and why couldn't they tell you this AFTEr the holiday weekend?
OK, I should get back to work. I've managed to cancel all my utilities except for Verizon. They take forever to find what you need to do to cancel, and by the time I got there, the offices were closed. Grrrr.
They're FUCKTARDS, Steph. Bosses do this kind of thing because they can, for reasons that usually have no basis in reasonable behavior or expectations. You are NOT incompetent, and Boy deserves all sorts of hugs for his incredibly RIGHT reaction.
Yeah.
Also, Scola's point about this all looking kind of fishy .
You need to focus on job-hunting now, because mean!boss is fucking you over and the company is probably on shaky ground.
I've worked at places where Accounts Payable had orders to sit on certain bills, and they threw staff in front of the angry calls.
Just be clear. This isn't a reflection of your character. This is a knife in your back. Don't presume they have your welfare in mind. They are Fucktards. Trust me, I know fucktard when I smell it.
Yeah, Tim just came home from a meeting and gave me Stern Face. I compromised and said I'd go up with him now, and reserve the right to leave whenever I wanted to.
Yeah. Because I get the impression that you're rather like me here, and whether or not you enjoy being around other people in some situation, it's still placing demands on your emotional reserves (as opposed to the more extraverted types, who get a boost from the interaction). So make sure you have an escape route if you find you just don't have anything left for it.
I *am* a total introvert in the actual definition; I'm not shy and timid (as some people [not Buffistae] make the mistake of thinking "introvert" means), but I *do* get drained by crowds and need alone time to recharge.
I went up to the freakshow in time to see the fire eaters do stuff like this: [link] and this: [link] which was SUPAH COOL.
Then it started to drizzle enough that I mutinied and didn't stick around to see if the burlesque troupe was going to perform (on a *wet* stage, I seriously doubt it). Our handful of people was there, and they were full of jollity (and margaritas), but not enough to make me want to stab.
Still, I'm happy to be home and dry. I'm also *exhausted* -- like, all my marrow has been sucked out (gee, I wonder why I would feel that way??) -- and I'm going to crawl into bed with comics and wait for Tim to come home.
Everything all y'all are saying about financial troubles is ringing really true. I don't think the company is going to tank this month (or year), but it's getting harder and harder for *printed* academic/medical journals to retain subscribers in a digital world. (We have a Web site, and an online version on the journals, but it's not working economically as well as it ought. That's no secret around the water cooler.)
Maybe this really is an blessing in disguise, like an early warning system to get the hell out while the getting is good. At least I have the luxury of *some* time to look for another gig.
Now I have to figure out what I want to do. Like, what would make me energized and excited to go do every morning when I woke up? (Right now, all I can think of as an answer to that is "go back to bed.")
Thanks, y'all. I *really* appreciate the support, and I love you all.
