I was torn between this and option 1, but it didn't seem like enough assurance we could pass the check. and the plus 2 seemed like it was more of a sure thing. guess it wasn't.

Well; whether it was more of a sure thing isn't immediately apparent. It had a 75% chance of coming off; whether the skill check was on a par with it is an open question.
