I disbelieve the apology was real. Unlike the initial swipe by Goldfarb, I have yet to see a link to the apology on an official McCain blog page, so I don't believe Goldfarb actually issued it. I don't believe Goldfarb would actually know what the six basic attributes are, or have a sens of humor that functions like that. I think some other blogger with real knowledge of D&D and funny made up the apology and attributed it to Goldfarb, and now it's getting passed around the blogosphere.
Also, I made my will save.
I can find the McCain comment all over the internet but I haven't been able to find the apology. Real or not, if it's funny may I please have a link?
I can't c&p the link from my iPhone, but if nobody beats me to it, I'll link it when I get to a real computer, laga.
I think here's a version of it:

eh, too much build-up for that amount of funny.
I think it's just mostly astounding that Goldfarb took a swipe at a group of people based on their hobby. Who's next, philatelists? And I remember the days of D&D being banned.
But, please - have they not seen the high-end catalogs selling high-end Halloween decorations? Geeks are the money.
The... dare I say it... "elitist" money?
Yeah, we're pointy headed elitist intellectuals.
Yeah, we're pointy headed elitist intellectuals.
Well, really it's just the wizard hats that are pointy. The heads underneath are still mostly normal looking.
