Should Thin Be Illegal?
PARIS — The French parliament's lower house adopted a groundbreaking bill Tuesday that would make it illegal for anyone _ including fashion magazines, advertisers and Web sites _ to publicly incite extreme thinness.
The National Assembly approved the bill in a series of votes Tuesday, after the legislation won unanimous support from the ruling conservative UMP party. It goes to the Senate in the coming weeks.
Fashion industry experts said that, if passed, the law would be the strongest of its kind anywhere. Leaders in French couture are opposed to the idea of legal boundaries on beauty standards.
The bill was the latest and strongest of measures proposed after the 2006 anorexia-linked death of a Brazilian model prompted efforts throughout the international fashion industry to address the repercussions of using ultra-thin models.
Conservative lawmaker Valery Boyer, author of the law, argued that encouraging anorexia or severe weight loss should be punishable in court.
OMG, the picture of the model is so freakishly skinny... or maybe I should say, very emmaciated.
But my way is honest. Okay, honest-ER.
She's still here til Friday, so I can save yours for our Farewell Lunch. Where there might actually be liquor!
If they make this into a Law and Order episode, I might have to watch.
May sweeps? I think they can do it.
Sox, sorry, it looks like I have to work late on Friday. Drat.
drag! maybe next time Tom -
I hate L&O and I'd watch that! Esp if it had the actual JKR.
I'm at work today and had to tell one of my bosses (the principal) that one of my other bosses (the district) fired my boss (the university) so I'm no longer at the work site as of 5/21. Way to put me in an awkward position!
ok, I think my boss is out for the rest of the week, but I need to wait for at least on hour before I can leave my desk to run an errand as he may call with an emergency.
Day is better. Hanging with 2 coworkers in the "Park" room (fake grass, blue ceiling with a wall of windows looking outside, working, lounging on the floor.
Also, people are starting to give me feedback so I can move forward on this stuff.
Unfortunately, marathon meeting from hell will start in an hour.
Dana, an excellent link! I even had a double-geekout moment when I saw the link's name. I spent a good portion of my vacation getting my mom hooked on I, Claudius, (it took her three eps or so to figure out who was who, but she loved all the murder and backstabbing, both literal and figurative) so seeing "Praetorian Guard" gave me Roman soap opera flashbacks.
Now I might miss the whole going away party anyway, since my outside meeting is starting later than expected. Sweet.
