First off, the aforementioned Rickman component, but also: issues of sin, repentance, redemption, what it means to be a good person, prejudice, atonement, loyalty -- for fans of the story arcs of Angel, Spike, or Faith, this is the hard stuff! Plus, the "I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just right" element -- I love the wicked witch, man.
