Spike's Bitches 40: Buckle Up, Kids! Daddy's Puttin' the Hammer Down.

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risqué (and frisqué), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

Yeah, it was cold here over the weekend. Sixty-five and drizzly. Clearly we sent that on east, so everybody can blame us for that.

Ann, that's a ferret.

My grandparents were "Grandma" and "Grandpa." With last names included if needed to avoid confusion.

But my family was pretty formal about how kids addressed grownups. Grownups were Mr./Mrs./Miss (Ms. didn't exist until I was about 10, and it took a while to become accepted), except for parents (Mom and Dad), grandparents, aunts/uncles (who were Aunt/Uncle Firstname), and a few of my parents' cousins (Cousin Firstname).

No such thing as courtesy aunts/uncles/grandparents unless they were the moral equivalent of same. So my mother's best friend was "Mrs. L" and not "Aunt J." But my cousins called the woman who practically raised their mother "Grandma V."

My mum's mum and dad are Nana and Grandad, and my dad's parents were Mummum and Papa.

Mummum and Papa were because my older sister (the first grandchild) couldn't pronounce anything else and by the time I came along they'd stuck.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

I am the best roommate ever. I just ordered a set of four commemorative Philadelphia Eagles shot glasses to replace the one I broke.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

in her quest to visit every surface in the house, this morning the cat discovered that she could reach the top shelf above the toilet by jumping off my back while I was using it. I could only sputter, "are you serious?" and there she was looking down from above.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

My mom's parents were Grandma and Papa, and my dad's parents were Oma and Opa. "Papa" came from my sister not being able to pronounce "Grandpa" as a toddler -- she also couldn't pronounce "Grandma," but Grandma refused to be known as "Gaga." Oma and Opa are the German words for grandma and grandpa.

FAY! A friend of mine just got a job at the American University in Cairo! She's got three little kids, and the oldest is going to be going to kindergarten at the American school. Any foreigner-in-Cairo or kids-in-Cairo advice I should pass along to her?

I'm so glad you said this first!

So, I had five tutoring appointments scheduled today. Two canceled overnight. One came for 10 minutes, and I sent him home because he's absolutely panicked about a roommate/moving situation. One hasn't shown, and I'm about to see if the last one shows. I expect she will, otherwise I would have already gone home. Her paper is due tomorrow, and we've had two other appointments where she's shown up and was even on time! So, I think she'll be here. But, ugh. I could have been at home working on my thesis. I have been working, but it keeps getting interrupted by having to check to see if students show up, etc.
