It's definitely a thing. An actor friend of mine said another friend was told by her agent that she didn't get sent out for Film/TV auditions because her head was too small.

Have any of you read the NYT article about people breaking up with people because of their literary tastes?

Would you break up with someone who read something too lowbrow?

Not for that alone, but those choices can be telling enough of other issues that they should not be ignored.

Then again, my DexH read Louis L'Amore (not that there is anything wrong with that...just not my cuppa) incessantly. The upside is that I think the literature significantly contributed to his chivalrous behavior...so that was nice.

God save me from Sunday's at the library - really.public libraries and Sunday - it is always my fault that someone can't finish their homework/write their report or that the internet has died. Kat, I read that this morning. And I thought, "Well, I *do* have very definite literary tastes, but...." and I thought about The Boy, and would I really break up with him if he didn't like the same books I did. He's not a big reader the way that I am, but he's not a cretin.

So I'm okay with someone not being a big reader. I would, however, draw the line at someone who proclaimed that he hated to read, because that would indicate, I think, a fundamental difference in our worldviews.

As for breaking up with someone who loved a specific book, well....

I want to say I wouldn't be that shallow, but then I think of The DaVinci Code or that Bridges of Madison County book. And then I thank my lucky stars that The Boy hasn't read either of them.

Eh. I have a ton of romance novels next to the bed, and Bob Bob doesn't read fiction. And I still bagged the most promising Kant scholar of his generation, so suck on that, Times hipster douchebags.

I think not being a reader would be more of a deal breaker than any specific book.

I think the problem I have is that I think of books as short hand for other aspects of one's personality. And it isn't, necessarily. I read all over the map. If someone broke up with me because I like to read easy pageturners or literary cannon, it would offend me deeply.

I had an online friendship end over Howard Stern one time. I tried to bring up something I'd heard on the show and she absolutely refused to continue the conversation.
