Hivemind question: do you text from your cell phone? Why or why not? Do you think texting is becoming increasingly popular?

I generally text for three reasons - sending the same message to multiple people, when I don't need an answer (i.e. a text saying I'm going to be late), or when I know that the person's in a loud place.

I mostly text people when I'm a) in public and don't want to share my conversation with everyone, even if it's innocuous, or b) when I'm at a concert/event and the noise level is too loud to hold a conversation.

Yeah, me too. Although I text with a coworker in other situations. Possibly it's because we didn't feel like we had a phone-level of relationship?

I don't have a cellphone either. I asked because we've got an IM Reference service at the library, and there's a way to set it up so we could receive text messages and reply through our existing IM setup. I've been seeing so many TV ads about texting, and my coworker with a 17 year old says all his son's friends are all over it, so I wonder if incoming college students will be all over the texting soon. For short stuff like "r u open??" We get IMs like that already.

Oh, jeez -- I just got a message about a power surge on a USB port, and then I realized I was kind of idly sticking a paper clip into the USB port on the side of my dock thing. Oops!

This is me. Also, there are certain people I text with way more often then we talk on the phone. Like my guitarist, texting is his main mode of communication.

Texting helped me out of a verrrry awkward potential dating situation last year, actually.
