I think lots of people who go into politics do it from a place of strongly held principles, especially among staff members. Then, the day to day drudgery of the job and the necessary compromises probably sucks the passion away.
Very much this. The greater good is a platitude, not a guiding principle. DC, especially, is petty and cynical. Sometimes I can't believe I'm still here.

I have things that slip over my shoes that have a bunch of blunt spikes at the ball of the foot. Very helpful.
I have YakTrax, which work really well, and are easy to put on and take off.
