Friends don't let friends read "Atlas Shrugged"

ooh! catching up!

Cashmere, could you try taping paper over the walls where Owen likes to draw? get a big roll of paper and just run it around at his comfort level?

Kat, loved the magnet! I've seen a "unattended children will be given candy and a puppy" signs. And, yes, unattended children have been a problem - some of the malls have had problems with kids being left in stores to amuse themselves (toy stores, mostly). Also libraries.

And you Californians think you've got problems with a presidential visit? try living in DC! he goes somewhere and the entire section of town closes down. Plus the "checkpoints" near the Capitol ... and periodic road closings for "security" reasons (with no advance warning). On the bright side, any time I'm late to work I can just mutter "motorcade" and people are OK with that.

And "Obama" isn't a black man's name? it's AFRICAN, people!

Great. Some people get to fight cheetahs in squash courts; I am destined to be remembered as the "Gore in '04" girl.

I just kinda kept thinking about all the black people with the names of slaveowners, etc. Like Washington, Jefferson...

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

And "Obama" isn't a black man's name? it's AFRICAN, people!

Then there are the people who say he's "not really a true African-American because he's not descended from slaves...."

eta: semi-demi x-posty....

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

"Obama" isn't a black man's name? it's AFRICAN, people!

Yeah, *now* they distinguish between African American, black, and African black. I didn't think I could lose more respect for people, but just about anything involved with race and this election makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

Not black, not black enough, not African American (oh, sweetie, he's LITERALLY that), has a white mother (which my sister pointed out that not that many black voters had realised that, considering).

Should he win, he's going to have an asterisk by his name for one reason or another.

Now tagless for your comfort.

Cashmere, could you try taping paper over the walls where Owen likes to draw? get a big roll of paper and just run it around at his comfort level?

I've ordered this and this for the playroom and we're going to Michaels for a big roll of paper for drawing.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Should he win, he's going to have an asterisk by his name for one reason or another.

Has he been caught videotaping Hilary's speeches or something?

You know what I don't get... there is a woman in my office who says "I am a Democrat, but I voted for Bush". Um, why?

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

India's pink posse hunts down bad guys

If you're a man in the Banda district of India who beats your wife, demands more dowry, or otherwise mistreats women, you'd better watch out. A posse of vigilante women clad in pink saris may soon come after you, and it's going to be ugly.

The "Gulabi Gang" (Pink Gang) uses sticks (lathis) and cricket bats to "teach erring men a lesson." In one instance, they chased a woman's abusive, alcoholic husband into a sugarcane field and sorely thrashed him. They also go after corrupt government officials. Last year, they stormed a police station after cops refused to register the case of a low-caste man simply because of his social standing.
