Falsely accused woman freed after 70 years
Seventy years locked up in institutions hardly seems to be a punishment that befits the crime of stealing half-a-crown.
However, it is just such a fate that befell Jean Gambell when at the age of 15, in 1937, she was falsely accused of stealing 2s 6d (12.5p) from the doctor's surgery where she worked as a cleaner.
She was sectioned under the 1890 Lunacy Act and even though the money was later found, she has been moved from mental institution to mental institution.
She spent years, lost in a maze of instutitons and care homes, trying to convince people in authority that she had a family. But nobody would believe her.
Macclesfield Social Services are now conducting an inquiry into Miss Gambell's incarceration.
Edited: for brevity.
Wow. I'm just...wow.
And the finer things in life turned to dust and ashes in my mouth. It shouldn't be like that. We should be able to hold on to those things. We need to be able to survive without losing that.
There shouldn't have to be a complete sacrifice.
Because humans have evolved as social animals who support each other
Eh some of us are getting better at that while others are still too busy blasting the bewhutsit out of others.
much ~ma for you and the shoulder PC
This just in: SoCal is on fire. No, like
all
of SoCal:

Map from 10:00pm tonight.
This is nuts.
No, like all of SoCal.
Including your pants? Because if your pants were on fire I'd doubt the veracity of the previous statement.
Also, keep your extinguisher handy.
Thankfully not my pants. Even more thankfully, not anywhere that puts the local LAistas (that I know of, anyway) in danger. But the air quality is awful. I'm doped up on Claritan D, and Drew had to buy an inhaler for the first time in 15 years. We were down in Disneyland with our good friend E. today, and our eyes were stinging by the evening. We didn't realize how bad the fires were until we got in the car and turned on the radio, though. I know this is fire season, but this many fires at once? Crazy and scary.

The first year I lived in LA Malibu caught fire. It was quite an apocalyptic sight from the Venice Beach.
It is a desert down there and prone to conflagration.
Yes, but Mr. Local Boy Drew says that this is extreme even for SoCal. Anyway, I'm sure they'll get it under control. I'm just freaked because I am
not
a native and am not used to "fire" being one of the four seasons. Plus, I hate not being able to breathe.
Okay, I need to try to get some sleep. Monday in the morning. Again.
The gubernator has declared a state of emergency for San Diego, Ventura, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Orange, and Riverside counties. At least 17 fires are burning.
P-C, much health~ma for your operation and recovery. Not to mention family~ma for the healing process after.
ZenKitty & family. ~ma for you too.
Beth, o my!
As for the fires. Aggg. Based on local TV news (and we know how accurate they are) if the Irvine fire keeps heading north, we wonder if SCR will get caught up. Thankfully they water the frack out of the artificial vegetation, so we should be safe. However, my silly apartment only seems to get a breeze during the Santa Ana's.... when they are blowing lots of soot and ash. Love this cute place!
