Even though we live in the middle of the Bay Area, right next to Oakland, the crime rate is pretty low. We have less than 6 homocides a year, if that - so add in that this was a kid on Halloween...the whole town is going to freak. I feel horrible for the family.

Yeesh. There was a woman killed here yesterday while returning from trick or treating with her three children. Horrifying, and then while the news cameras were all hanging around outside the house, her brother-in-law showed up to pick her up for something, having no idea anything was wrong.

The slaying is Alameda's first homicide of the year. The city reported two killings in 2006, none in 2005 and one slaying in 2004.
Appeared to have been part of a robbery attempt.
