Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'm asking what subtext--subtext of what? I'm completely lost here. I don't get the code.

I don't, either. But I miss subtext a lot. I thought it was just the show thinking it was clever. Look! They're detectives! And the audience is watching them! Let's use this song!

Which is fine, because I loves me some Elvis.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

Well there is not subtext and the moment, but they are implying sexual attraction between Watson and Holmes. (Only in the song, though Holmes acting dickish over the ex could be take that way. Also as him just being a pain.)

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

I'm finding myself increasingly nostalgic for police procedurals that care whether the case will hold up in court.

And people wonder why I continue to watch old old L&O episodes and Columbo.

I do too. ION is running four hours of L&O:CI this afternoon.

Major Crimes. But you have to put up with way too much Rusty. And the whole veteran police officer who is offended by plea bargains. What does he think happened between the prosecutors and the defense lawyers after Brenda got her confessions?

Isn't that what your seven million flavours of CSI are meant to address?

they are implying sexual attraction between Watson and Holmes

I'd be very surprised if they were doing anything more complex than playing a song with the word "detective" in it.

I am the fly who dreams of the spider

I took it to mean that Watson was no longer watching the baseball game, and was now allowing her focus to be with the consulting detective, whom it is her job to watch over.
