I heard somewhere that at some point they wanted The Rockford Files to be more like HFO. Less with The Funny.(Which would have sucked, imo) James Garner said "You hired me, and you know what I do. You want Jack Lord, get someone else." They didn't, cause Garner was a producer. As much as I love classic TV(and I do--more than a friend) can the remake thing die, please? Because you can totally be *influenced* by something and not just drop new hotties on it. Like Veronica Mars is, in my opinion, and somebody in TV Guide's, very "Rockford-" influenced, but it's not fanfic...she's not his secret daughter or anything.

James Garner rocks. Like Clooney, he's the closest an American ever got to being Cary Grant. Unfortunately, he was far less appreciated than either (though he had some big successes).

Ann, that's a ferret.
He also made some fine movies during the '60s, including Move Over Darling -- a remake of My Favorite Wife in which he takes the Cary Grant role with Doris Day in the Irene Dunne role. OK, it isn't as good as the original, but it's fine light entertainment. As is The Thrill of It All (in which he and Day also play a married couple).

I always loved the goofiness of the Support Your Local Gunfighter/Sheriff movies. But his best films (IMO) are The Great Escape and Murphy's Romance. (I've yet to see The Americanization of Emily, so I can't attest to the quality of that film, but I've heard it's good.)
