the hardest to learn / was the least complicated

I generally like AV Club's reviews and their commenters, because the regular commenters there are fairly civilized and aren't there to troll and fight. So I'm reading the comments on AV Club's review of this episode, and I'm hit SO HARD by how many people are posting variations on "I don't understand why Sherlock would relapse after finding out Alfredo was alive," etc.

HE'S AN ADDICT. This is what they DO. He said it in S1 to Irene (when he still thought she was Irene): he told her about how his "dabbling" with narcotics turned into an addiction after he thought she died, followed by rehab, and she said "You're better now," and he replied "I'm *sober* now. I'll always be an addict."

As with all fiction, our response to it is colored by what we bring to it, so my opinion comes from the fact that I am from a family full of alcoholics. I think this show has done fantastic work with the through-line of Sherlock's addiction, and the daily grinding struggle to stay sober. I can't wait to see how this develops next season.

(And it's kind of crushing to see him relapse, but that's my own issues speaking, and I know that. Plus [spoilers for Arrow] finding out that Quentin is drinking again is also pretty depressing. But realistic.)

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

I'm a little meh on this episode because, for me, Oscar so pointedly trying to make Sherlock relapse is narrative overkill. And whether he did or not seems ambiguous to me.

I didn't love this episode, but then I think it's impossible to follow the Kitty arc.

I do want to find out what happens next, so effective on that front.

Always Anti-fascist!

Watching Aquarius. Can't decide if it's really good or if it just pushes my buttons enough that I think that it is.

My memory is for shit, so I can't remember whether casting news is allowed in show threads, or if it has to go in Spoilers.

But for the people who haven't already heard it elsewhere, Elementary has cast Sherlock's father, who will be a regular in S4. I'll post a link if I'm allowed to do that here, or in Spoilers if that's where it goes.

Or you could google it.

(Seriously, though, I cannot remember for the life of me what the spoiler rule is with casting news. I feel like it's okay in-thread, but ISTR arguments that it's not. Do we have a Buffista Magna Carta where I can look this up?)

So...YOU are the Magna Carta? Awesome!

Okay, I'll post it in Spoilers Lite. If anyone cares. Which they should. Because it's kind of PERFECT.
