Cop Rock had its moments (and every time I see an ad for one of these TV judges that has a choir singing in the courtroom, I think "did we learn NOTHING from Cop Rock?"). And seriously - it was better than a lot of what's on now. And getting renewed.
I will never forget the jury/choir rocking and singing "he's guilty! and now he's got to pay!" In case you missed it - [link] (God bless You Tube)
so I'm not sure why they use it so much.
It's probably to save time. They don't have time to do multiple takes, so they do a few and cobble them together with autotune.
I'm fairly certain that Rachel and Jessie are both auto-tune free (i've worked with plenty of broadway performers and every one of them would claw out the eyes of any director who even hinted at wanting to autotune their voices. Heck, some even protested using mics for live mixing because they hated hearing the slight alteration to their voice of just ampliciation. It's a pride thing, a "my voice is so well trained that i can do any effect you want better than a computer program" thing.) Mercedes also sounds un-touched.
But if Finn's solos were autotuned anymore they would be MIDI. It hurts a little. I was very happy to see Puck get some solo time at Regionals.
IMO, and I'm just going by the sound of their voices over the season, there may be instances where auto tune was not used, but I do not think they were auto tune free for the entire season.
It might be that when they sing alone, autotune is less likely to be used, but I think I have detected it at times when they are singing in a group.
I fucking hate autotune. Sorry. It just sort of burst out of me. But seriously, as a voice teacher, autotune is a travesty. Not that there haven`t been ways people have been correcting stuff for decades, but sheesh people, learn to sing.
This discussion makes me think of an interview I heard with Alyson Hannigan after the Buffy musical, where she said that even though she cannot sing at all, she totally would have sung more if she'd known what they could do to people's voices.
They didn't do much to her voice at all. She was kind of terrible, but she owned what she sang :)
Finn, Quinn, and Artie are the ones who are overwhelmed by the electronic enhancement all too often to me. (And it's odd that they do it so much for Artie, since Kevin McHale is a good singer.) But I do recall at least a couple of songs where even Lea Michelle was auto tuned and it's REALLY jarring to hear it on her voice.
I agree. I'm not sure why they did it.

Um, what did she sing? IIRC it was like one or two lines in the whole thing.
The autotuning of Finn is out of control. I'm sure Cory Monteith is a perfectly lovely fellow, but since he can't sing and can't dance, I'm kind of at a loss as to why he was cast as Finn. Pulls me out of the story a lot more than it should.
Lea Michelle has definitely been autotuned at times. I really noticed it in the Madonna episode, but the first time I thought it happened was when she sang Take a Bow. (The Rhianna version, not the Madonna version, although that would've been awesome!) It was so weird because she didn't need it at all. Rhianna is no one's vocal powerhouse. I really wish they'd stop with the autotune because most of the kids don't seem to need it.
