Spike's Bitches 37: You take the killing for granted.

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risqué (and frisqué), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

That's so cool, meara. And a great send off from DC, where you've been pretty much all your adult life, no?

Exactly this. I was contemplating it even if I didn't leave town, but now that I am, I definitely wanted it.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

OMG I suddenly know what tattoo I want. Thanks meara. I can't decide if I'm happy or scared or mad or what. I would alter the colors a bit

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'm so glad I knew what bemused meant. Thinking misle was a word has really scarred me.

I don't have the steel to tattoo my wrist. I originally though that's where I'd have my first one, and cover it for business when needed, but I'm way too scattered for that. I'll be sticking to torso, because when that shows in a work context I'm already in all sorts of trouble.

All that having been said, cool tat, meara!

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

But if this many fairly well-read people all had the same wrong definition of "bemused," doesn't this kind of become a prescriptivist vs. descriptivist thing?

Because books.

I knew bemused wasn't the same as amused, but quizzically! Like ita, though, I thought misled was "mizzled" for the longest time, when I was young. I actually wish mizzled was a word.

'Course, once in high school I also spelled segue as segueway, since I'd only ever heard it spoken. Oops.

By "this many" we're up to, what, five? Who knows--maybe less well people (and they do have numbers) know what it means justs fine.

OK. Merriam-Webster has "to cause to have feelings of wry or tolerant amusement" as its third definition. I feel less crazy now.

The status is NOT quo.

I knew what bemused meant (and the shades of meaning around it), but I don't think it's a big deal to have confused it a little. Lots of times we learn words through context in books, and if we never actually look up the word it's easy to get ideas about their meanings that are slightly off the actual definition. I've discovered plenty of words that I didn't have quite right once I looked them up.

Back tattoos of the mother is that you are absolutely right - Ame

Families are so weird. I'm staying with my Dad's sister and she does not get along with either of her sister-in-laws who are also out here (one lives here and one is visiting).

I feel kinda stuck in between everyone. Playing peacemaker. Not that there is open warfare - it is much more subtle than that - but I'm still in the middle.

Tomorrow we are going to Wet N Wild...not that I brought my swim suit or would be seen in public in it even if I had...but hey, more time with the cousins.
