DJ, I just finished reading this, which helped with my mood. Not even the article itself so much, but all of the stories in the comments.
Shortly after 9/11 Louisiana firemen collected donations and purchsed a firetruck that was given to New York. He was perplexed by the fact that he couldn't find any of the fire fighters from that company. About a week later I learned why. They were already on their way back down to New Orleans to donate the fire truck back to us.

Man, I missed billytea and Nilly visitations! I would be annoyed at myself, except that I'm really much too tired to generate that much emotion. Matilda is sitting at my feet happily playing with her rubber snot-sucker and a giant paperclip (yes, we've really gone whole hog with the fancy fancy toys), but she was a demon of wriggling and squirming and vigorous flopping all night long -- slept like a rock from 8:30 until 1, then pummeled Hec and me unmercifully until 5:30. At which point he took her out to the couch for solo pummeling so I could get at least a bit of sleep.
Funny what phrases miss the Buffista International Hivemind.
I'd never heard "up the duff" before but now I kinda love it. And now I want to find out what else the USian contingent of the Hivemind is missing. I can offer up exactly one linguistic oddment: when I was in college, I asked my Greek grandmother what Greek people say when they want to convey what USians mean when they say, "It's Greek to me" and she said that everyone she knew said something that roughly translates into English as "By me it's Chinese."
It's not as dirty-sounding as "up the duff," but it's all I've got.

I think it's just being in Dallas, there's not a lot of sympathy, and I'm hearing a lot of stuff like the post I copied here yesterday.
