My Asian names are all hidden. Used to be clear I was Japanese. But with a western first name and a western married name, none of my phone contacts ever knew. Then again, I could go by my middle & maiden names, and you'd never know I wasn't Japanese from Japan until I opened my mouth and spoke Midwesternese.

Google Books finds a reference from The Gentleman's Magazine in 1789; Galenet finds one from 1724, which apparently paraphrases a 1640 statute as providing that

I'm of indeterminate origin based on appearance and name. People here assume I am latina. And Grace (a more chinese baby could not be born in my family) is listed as caucasian on the hospitals forms. I confuse people (Noah's optho asked if I adopted him!).
